The Circle Game
The Bohemian is 20 years old today.
She came into the world after a long bumpy ride to the Army hospital in Landstuhl, Germany on January 6th, 1988 - exactly on her due date, in true Capricorn style.

Twenty years! How the hell did that happen? One day she's banging on her Little Tykes toy piano, I turn around, and she's a college student on the other side of the country. I am very proud of her, not just as my daughter, but as the young woman she is becoming. She's already leaving her mark on this world.
I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. Life's a bitch. You've got to go out and kick ass.

Yeah. That's my daughter. Grabbing the world by the lapels, kicking ass. If it's good enough for Maya, she's doing something right.

Yes, of course I'm freaked the hell out by the fact that my daughter is 20 years old. La la la la la ... I can't hear you ........

Wow! That's a seriously momentous thing, your kid turning 20. I'm sure it's out-freaking to you, but, my goodness, looking at her outcomes, it's clear that you've done a terrific job: she's bright and hardworking (hello scholarship to college, I dream about you); she's socially aware (checked out her blog); and she's got real talent as an artist (I'm not just saying that. I never give false praise about art or writing because I do them myself and they mean so much to me. She's got a fabulous color sense and the outlines are expressive. She should look at the work of Kara Walker, who does amazing paper cut outs that skewer standard American history and express the realities of African-American history. Here's a link:

Anyway, sorry to drone on. Don't get me started about art!)
So enjoy having done the most important job any parent can do- raising your kid into a kind, dedicated, decent human being who is using the gifts she has to make a good life for herself.
(Also, I saw that pic of you in the purple scarf. You don't look a day over lavender!)
Happy Birthday, Bohemian!!
And happy day to you too, Cowbell! There ought to be a ritual on birthdays to honor the moms of the celebrated -- they're the ones that did all the work on that momentous day, after all.
And I'll repeat Elizabeth re: the artwork. Having seen 20-odd examples of the Bohemian's work, it truly is dazzling.
Happy Birthday Bohemian!!
Now tell your mom to stop crying.
E: Thank you - she really is an amazing person. And I'm not biased at all. I'll send her this way to read your art comments. Thank you for link - wonderful!!
(A strategically placed scarf can do wonders for a gal.)
Red: Ha, you're right - I am the one with the stretchmarks after all, as I love to tell them at any opportunity. Like now.
RG: The only way I'll be crying is if my boys don't win this next playoff game. In which, the daughter will be sobbing right along with me.
It's a day for birthdays. My brother turned 53 today. I haven't seen him yet...probably still in bed with the covers pulled over his head!
Happy Birthday Bohemian! I love your artwork too. I hope art is in your area of study at least on an elective basis. You have some real talent that should not be allowed to go dormant. Cowbell, kudos to you for raising such wonderful kids. I just came back to comment on that awful jackass at your son's wrestling meet, to find this wonderfully calming post. Now I don't want to rant.
Hey what a great day! Happy Birthday to your daughter. I totally love the artwork I have seen. Love all the colors.
Good job for the birth thingee...that Moms do so well.
Elizabeth cracks me up...you dont look a day over lavender! Funny
Gavin: Actually her b'day was yesterday - I started the post last night. Happy day to your bro!
Tater: Thanks for the good words! I love her art, it's really unique. She has never actually studied it (other than art history class). Oh, and never give up a good rant ... especially around here.
Sageweb: Hey, any kind of purple, I'm in.
They grow up fast.
I really like that picture!
Happy Birthday! Was 1988 really twenty years ago? La la la la...
Ahhhh ha ha. I was gonna be all touched, then I cracked up because I saw the title of your earlier post, which was "Assdad's Testosterone Surge".
So you were what 12 when she was born? A true post-Christmas miracle.
Joking aside much happiness to your beloved Bohemian. From the sounds of it you both hit the jackpot 20 years ago.
Happy birthday to your daughter. From everything you have written she sounds like a smart, confident young woman who is passionate about some really important things.
Teaching college level young women in literature and cultural studies, I'm always impressed with someone who has the traits which your daughter seems to posses. Unfortunately this society still does many things to discourage full female autonomy, in turn often inhibiting young women from truly knowing themselves. It's always refreshing to see when that dynamic is thwarted.
Obviously, you deserve a lot of the credit here.
wow..do I know how you feel..one day she's wearing a yellow taffeta dress to play football in and the next thing I know she's living in san francisco in haight ashbury and working as a para legal...dang..she will turn 35 in may..it gets no easier ...
And many happy returns! For a child bride you've done an astonishing job as a parent sister! My red angora beret is off to you lady. The parenting parts can be evil at times, but watching them turn into their own true selves is the most amazing thing ever- I have a few years to go before 20, but I started quite late after all ;) Look at it this way honey, you'll be a GILF..
Happy belated birthday dear girl.
cowbell, try these numbers on for feeling old...me 63, kids, 45, 44, 37.
Whim: Yep, faster than NASCAR.
Allan: I know! It doesn't seem that long ago, does it?!
WM: Yes, I figured you'd appreciate that. Maybe we should get a t-shirt made for him.
Willym: Yes! Something like that ... give or take. (THanks, I'll pay you later.)
Al: Thanks, Al. She's always been sort of an "old soul", even when she was a little little girl. I'd love for her to be able to take one of your classes - unlike Ocounty, who apparently lives in fear of that possibility.
YDG: Ha! Yours sounds terrific! But I'd expect no less than a kickass daughter out of you. My younger daughter played football, but she didn't wear a yellow taffeta dress.
DL: NOOOO! I will never be a GILF! Because I will never be a "G". I will be ... I don't know, but 40 was hard enough, I can't think about being a G for few more decades. You're so right on the bit about watching them turn into their true selves being the ultimate reward. Very very cool.
Rosemary: Yeah, my mom kind of freaked when I hit the big 40. Which I can barely bring myself to write, even now.
MILF! MILF! MILF! "Call me Stiflers Mom."
Belated Happy Birthday to the Bohemian! Great artwork. You're doin' mama proud.
RG: Put that away and go back to class.
EG: She certainly is.
