Meanwhile, Back at the Batcave...

---UPDATE BELOW---

Batman is home from the Evil Dog Abuser known simply as "Vet". Actually, Mason is the one who dreads visits to Vet. Batman does fine. They all love him there. They are convinced he is an "angel", one of the "sweetest dogs they've seen", and "unusually smart". He's not even afraid to be left there -- he just trots right on back, like he's going to get a treat or something.

Anyway, I picked him up a bit ago. Poor guy, he's woozy and a bit stumbly. He was all drugged up, but when he saw me, he tried to wag and prance just like he was sober, eliciting oohs and ahs from the receptionist and techs all the while. Sling, I don't think he gave away his superhero identity, but the tech did seem to be looking at him with a newfound respect. He's sleeping next to me now, snoring, which he doesn't usually do.

So Batman has these huge round eyes, I mean the dog is channeling Li'l Orphan Annie at the best of times. When he's drugged, he looks like that dog in the fairy tales with dinner plates for eyes. Even the folks at the vet offices, who see drugged dogs every day, can't get over how crazy big his eyes get. Once I took Batman back after his stomach surgery of '05. It was months later, and the tech was all, "Omigod! That's the dog who had the gigantic eyes!" It's like there's no iris whatsoever, just giant black pupils. It looks kind of freaky, actually. I was going to get a picture of it, but with his green "magic eye" effect even in normal photos, I was afraid I'd blind him with them dilated like that.

You all would not believe the size of the root on this tooth! It's bigger than the other 2 pieces combined. I mean, this thing is a tusk, people. It must've gone all the way up to his nose. Now I understand why the canine teeth in particular are such a big deal. From what the vets I called said, and the internet as well, the canine tooth is the worst tooth to remove because the root is enormous, relatively speaking. Apparently it's a real job to get those jokers out of there, and now I see why. And since I know you guys love seeing gory pics, here's one for morbidly curious.

I should've put a quarter in there for scale or something. Put it this way, the root piece on the right is the size of the entire bottom half of my first finger, no kidding. And I have long fingers. The piece on the far left is the part that was actually visible in his mouth before the break - what you would think of as his actual "tooth". Most of the middle piece was under the gum line - this is the other piece I pulled out the day after he broke it. The root is flipped over from how it would've fit if all 3 pieces were together. Anyway, it doesn't look as massive in the picture, but suffice it to say, I was shocked.

So that's that. She also removed a small wart that was growing on his lip, cleaned his teeth and did blood work, so he's good to go. He's got antibiotics and pain meds that should have his eyes working their magic for a while yet.

Poor pretty boy. I'm glad he's ok.

--------------------------------------
UPDATE:

The patient had his first dose of pain meds and his antibiotic, and is sleeping, although restlessly. He managed to eat his dinner, and kept it down. Batman doesn't play when it comes to food -- he could probably lose every tooth in his mouth and still find a way to eat. He's been coughing every now and then, his throat sounds froggy when he sleeps, from the breathing tube. I can tell he hurts. Poor buddy.

Earlier today he woke up, saw his green ball, and gingerly picked it up with the good side of his mouth. He stood there for a while, then walked over and sat next to me. He just sat there for the longest time, holding the ball, like he wasn't sure what to do next. Finally I held my hand out, and he just dropped the ball in my hand and lay down. When a Lab can't figure out what to do with a ball, you know he's feeling crappy.

Okay, that's just plain scary. I'm glad your boy is doing fine. I'm sure he'll be all hung over and quiet tomorrow. After that, he should be his old self. 'Cept for having the hillbilly smile now.

Good night Irene! Poor baby! Yep, the bigger ones stay a little stoned for a day or so. Glad he got home and is on the mend!

Kiss, Kiss to sweet Batman. He is a beauty that's for sure. I gave Penny the pain meds until they were all gone because i had a tooth ache at the same time and knew exactly how she felt.....in fact I still have a tooth ache. I'm glad he is OK....you too.

Glad to know he is home with his mom, and all is well. I can't stand to leave my baby at the vet, and I know you must have been beside yourself. Give him a big hug from me and my little one!

Yikes, what a chunk of dog mouth! Glad the pup is back safe at home, snoring next to you. I don't know why, but I love sleeping dog noises, don't you? They're so silly....

I also wanted to add that I can't stop feeling my own big pokey tooth now.

Evil-G: Oh no you did not just call my dog a hillbilly.

DL: Poor baby indeed. He's not feeling so hot right now.

Rosemary: Thanks - he is a pretty boy. I can't believe your tooth is still hurting! You need some better drugs...

Tater: Oh, it was the worst! I hated having to leave him there. You'd think it would make it better that he does so well at the vet, he just goes right on back with them -- but it made me feel even worse, like I was tricking him. He looked at me as he was goign through the door, not worried at all, like he trusted that of course I'd never send him back for anything but a treat or to play. Yeah, I didn't do too well with that...

E: you're not kidding - the picture really doesn't show how huge that thing was. He's knocked out again right now; I think his throat is bothering him from the breathing tube, he sounds really froggy.

Hat: I did! You should've seen it before. It's more porous on the root, not as shiny as the actual tooth part. Yeah, if I had a tooth that big, it would be encroaching on my eye socket. Crazy.

Holy crap!..That's like friggin' ivory or something.
Maybe you could get a sailor to carve a scrimshaw whaling scene on it.

Sling -- HAHAHA! You're ON with the comments this week.

That is enormous as the actress said to the archbishop!

Glad everything came out okay - came out okay get it yuk yuk yuk - and that our buddy Batman is on the mend. And remember males suffer more when they are sick - its a scientific fact - so some extra attention is in order.

Holy wow, is that a big ol' tooth in your head or are you just crappy to see me?

Glad he's on the mend, and safe back at home. Poor widdle guy.

The whole tooth thing has made me queazy (spelling?) I am glad he is doing better. They are such sweet babies when they are under the weather. It tugs at my little heart. I am an emotional mess anytime I go to the Vet with pet injuries.

Willym: It certainly is! And yes, males do seem to suffer from the illusion (note key word, there) of extra suffering. I know when my father or my ex had a cold, you'd have thought they'd been revisited by the Black Plague. Batman is more stoic, but he has been glad for the attention.

Red: yes - it's huge. The camera must take several millimeters off, ha! This morning the fool actually thought he could chew! That green ball will be the death of him.

Sageweb: Yes, he's been very sweet, and very pitiful. I hate going to see Vet. I need to bring Mason soon ... that's the one I'm really dreading. He gets terrified. We're talking drooling, trembling. I think he's afraid he's going to be dumped, poor old man.

Poor guy. I hope he recovers quickly.

Poor, poor thing. I feel your pain - you know I doo-doo. He'll be back to his old self in no time.

It's good to hear that Barman us snoring himself into oblivion. It's also good to know you can breath a bit easier. I'm glad, and I also have no doubt the reverse would be true if the situation was a different one.

But that tooth, holy crap!

sorry - is.

Can you give him an ice cube? Would he know what to do with it?

One of my parents' dogs loves to play with them in summer, the other one doesn't get it. It might numb Batman's mouth a bit.

Ow!ow! ow!...soon to be bow wow wow, I hope.

Poor Jingles.

He says, he was stoned again...

I'm glad he'll be alright, poor stoned puppy dog.

Whim -- thanks, he was feeling better yesterday, but it seems to be bothering a bit more today.

RG -- Thanks. I'm glad Ms. Diamond has left her troubles behind...

Al -- yes, I'm breathing much easier, thanks. And yes, the tooth was a whopper.

SK -- He'd probably just break another tooth on it, ha! I put a bit of clove oil on it a bit ago, and he went to sleep. He gets more pain drugs this evening.

WM -- I know, poor him. He's been much more needy than usual, poor guy.

Lorraine -- thanks, and yes, he was a bit loopy for a while.
