So I Lied.
"So, I'll probably actually be blogging again for a while."
Yeah. So I lied.
If anyone knows what it means when your computer powers up, the background picture shows up, but nothing else on the desktop does, let me know, mmm-kay? Yeah, no task bar, no icons, no Start button, nothing. This happened after I got 2 quarantine notifications from Norton. Damn Trojans. Always slipping in and making trouble.
Those notifications came after a certain Teen Demon used my computer to "communicate" with her friends. I put forth a mandate, long ago, clearly stating that no AOL, MySpace, chatters, or their ilk shall ever be installed or accessed from The Brick. Henceforth and whereas. Put that crap on your own machine. Mine can't handle it. But, being snowed in, and her computer having access problems after coming back from the college network, she ignored my edict and indulged in a day's worth of friending, chatting, and LOLing. The next time I powered up, hello Norton notification, goodbye desktop.
I told you! But noooo, Mom's just being silly. She doesn't know what she's talking about. AOL never hurt anyone. MySpace doesn't spam. Look, I may not be the world's foremost computer expert, but I know The Brick. It's a very sensitive machine. Only the basics. If I say no crap spam-meister LOL OMG stuff, I mean it. Damn it.
SO not ROFLing here, folks.
So if anyone knows what the hell that no-desktop business means, or how to fix it, let me know.
Oh, and Happy Friggin' New Year.

I.HATE.AOL!!..
I got a virus that wiped out my whole hard drive from one of their handy 'links'.
Now then..When your computer is booting up,before Windows opens, you can hit F8(or F5..one o' those two) and it will take you to a screen where you can access 'system restore',and pick a date when your computer was functioning properly..That's all I got short of formatting your hard drive, and installing Windows all over again.
I know nothing about computers, except how useful they are and how totally it would suck if someone trashed mine. So all I can say is THAT TOTALLY SUCKS!
No WONDER you haven't been posting!
You might want to call The Geek Squad - they fixed my housemate's laptop, although they're just as expensive as a plumber.
Are you sure your PC hasn't been communicating with the other ill appliances in your house? Perhaps they're in some sort of suicide pact? I'd keep an eye on the stove if I were you.
After my trip to NOLA, the screen on my laptop turned fuzzy and pinkish. Online research told me it was a crushed cable. I took it to the Genius Bar at the Apple store yesterday and everything was fine. Typical. But in this case, I was happy since it's working and didn't cost me a penny!
Maybe you'll luck out, too!!!
I think it is time to buy a Mac.
Go rid of AOL real early in life - and though I've only had one crash on this PC I've got the MAC for back-up.
Just glad to see you back and still kicking, didn't like to send any sort of SOS message as I knew you were busy. Hope that gang chez vous had a good Holiday season.

Sling: "... and pick a date when your computer was functioning properly." Functioning properly? BWA-HA-HA-HA!!
E: You said it, sister. Sucks. Ass.
RG: Hello? Geek Squad? So you got my message about The Brick? You say you know exactly what to do? Oh, that's wonderful! What? Bend over? Well, OK ... got it, now what? Get my credit card out? Say your name?! Bitch! You're as expensive as the damn plumber! And yes, it's highly probably that The Brick is plotting and scheming with something else in the house. My money's on the fridge. It's on it's last leg, and likes the ice cream to be mushy.
G: And thus the difference between Apple and Dell.
Sage: You're probably right ... but those compatibility problems ... folks at my place of employment who use Macs have trouble using Citrix and can't use/see Publisher docs, which I use a lot.
Willym: Oh, SOS msgs are always appreciated! Everyone likes to feel loved, even when they're bitching. Holiday season basically sucked ass, but hey, at least I'm employed and have a roof over my head in these lean times. A new *@#%! roof, too!
OMG, i dnt no what id do if that hpned to me.........Damn kids. When my daughter was here, she totally screwed up my favorites while she scrolled thru shoes on Zappos. Steve had the blue screen of death last Wednesday....don't have a clue as to when you can do....I ditched AOL long ago, don't chat, don't really like F/book either.
I'm with Sage on this one. And it is pretty obvious that the OMFH has hatched a vile conspiracy, not that the kids aren't in on it too mind you...
Had two hard drive deaths in the family recently and it genuinely does suck! Especially if you're an idiot and don't back up. Yes, that's when I got to say "I warned you."
Rosemary: I never HAD AOL to ditch the damn thing -- but apparently there is some sort of chatter that the offspring insist is a legitimate form of communication. I told them AOL was of Satan.
Doralong: Yeah, I've considered it, but the kids are on PCs and having both in the house ... i don't know. Plus, I admit, I do LOVE Office 2007, and use it too much in depth in to relearn other apps. I had a colleague who was a huge mac fan who was constantly annoyed that she could never access or use Publisher docs, and i use those a lot at work. I don't know. Too scared to make the switch, I guess. Heard too many tales of the compatibility mess, even from diehard fans. If I spend the $$ and have issues, I'm screwed. Wow ... I guess I'm not much of a risk taker when it comes to computers, am I?
No live inauguration blogging?!?!?!?
Oh, I know what the problem is:

...YOU NEED MORE COWBELL!
Actually, you can run Win-doze and Mac on the new Mac's. You just install XP using bootcamp.
Though I run Citrix which is a tool of Satan at work, on a Mac. I'm hoping there is a special little spot in hell for whoever came up with Citrix.
Good luck with the brick. If I had to give up my Mac, I'd learn Linux.
How is it going with the computer. I die when mine goes down...sad ins't it...i still have Don's old one but I feel really wrong and strange going into all his stuff...I will one day...have it all backed up...
Looking forward to your posting again soon
